Amid the high-born ranks of the Confederate cavalry, Nathan Bedford Forrest was ignorant, all but unlettered, and regarded to the degree that no more than a guerrilla. His tactic was the headlong charge, mounted by such swiftness and ferocity that General Sherman called him a "the old serpent" who should "be hunted down and killed allowing that it costs 10,000 lives and bankrupts the money-bag." And in a war in that officers prided themselves on their seemliness, Forrest habitually issued surrender-or-die ultimatums to the antagonist and often intimidated his own superiors. After essential ~ in command at the notorious Fort Pillow Massacre, he went attached to haunt the South as the elementary grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
